After October comes the month of November, the 11th month of the year. During this time, men everywhere are seen growing mustaches to raise awareness about men’s health. Movember charity is raising awareness not only in the UK, but across the world.
It all started in 2003 Melbourne, Australia where two friends (Travis Garone and Luke Slattery) were having a chat in a local bar. They started to talk about the latest trends and how a mustache was not in style anymore and they joked about bringing it back. They thought about growing the ‘MO’ to show awareness for men’s health as a friend’s mother had inspired them as she fundraises for breast cancer awareness. The friends both sent an email around titled ‘ARE YOU MAN ENOUGH TO BE A MAN’ and as a result 30 men agreed to sign up to the challenge. The men grew and wore the mustaches with such enthusiasm that in 2004 a decision was made between both friends Travis and Luke to get men to grow mustaches for a cause. They now have their own website and a lot of people are donating to a good cause to raise awareness for men’s health. The main causes they raise awareness for are prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health and suicide prevention.
This campaign is now a very successful campaign worldwide. running for over 10 years. Going from only 30 men in 2003 to now over 5 million Mo Bros and Mo sisters to date. The participating countries are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA. They have to date raised over £402 million since 2003 and funded 832 men’s health projects since 2003.
